What is art? Artists
and patrons have varied views of what constitutes art.
My belief is something tangible, forged by hands that
a person produces from their heart & mind. A planned
piece that appeals to an audience, whether that appeal
is positive or negative is up to the viewer.
Broken down to its common denominator "art evokes
emotion."
Constructivist movement
Constructivism
was experimental, innovative, and versatile and creatively
distinguished itself from other Russian Avant Garde
movements of the early 20th century. It encompassed
a diverse medium and fields including:
Drawing
Advertising
Painting
Poster
design
Sculpture
Book
cover design
Photography
Furniture
design
Photomontage
Architecture
Artists
and the movement that have influenced me.
In
the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917, a group
of artists who came to call themselves Constructivists
set out to create a new art for the future. I have grown
to know these pioneers that shaped my perceptions and
personal style.
Alexander Rodchenko Rodchenko who hails as
one of the forefathers of this movement experimented in
painting, typography, photography, collage and montage.
He applied his inventive spirit and sense of responsibility
into graphic design for poster design and magazine covers
for the emerging communist state. His use of geometric
shapes, bold san serif type and photomontage easily translated
to a largely illiterate Russian population.
E Lissistky Another
pioneer of the Constructivist Movement applied modern
painting concepts of form and space to applied design.
Lissistky derived these forms from interchanges between
his painting and architecture concepts. He also called
himself a constructor that would forge a unity between
art and technology. He saw this need as a new beginning
for mankind. Communism and social engineering would create
a new order providing mankind with a richer society and
environment.
Vladimir Tatlin Tatlin devoted himself
to industrial design, visual communication and applied
arts serving the communist society. He called upon other
artist to stop producing useless things and turn to the
poster, for "such work now belongs to the duty of
the artist as a citizen of the community who is clearing
the field of rubbish in preparation for the new life."
How
the Constructivist movement influenced modern day art
and design.
A culmination of
pioneering efforts of artists, designers, architects
and the timing of political upheaval in Russia laid
the groundwork for movements to follow.
Every day we view
graphic and web design that still incorporates the basic
fundamentals of visual communication such as:
Communicating in a succinct and quick manner to an
audience.
Bold use of type clearly emphasizing a message.
Movement of objects, graphics and photos, directing the
eyes natural willingness to follow a designated path.
The
strategic use of form and space to invite a viewer's interest
to explore.
Explosive incorporation of vibrant colors, grabbing
the eyes attention and exciting the viewer's emotion.
There are so many facets
of the Constructivist movement we exploit in today's
design but at the epicenter of their goal, is the natural
marriage of technology and art... so take the time to
appreciate modern design & those who have created
it for us.
